Served as Steward in Merchant Navy during WWI with his father. Shipwrecked on the SS Wimmera off the north coast of New Zealand in June 1918 when it hit a German mine. Dared by mates to go to sea for one more voyage. Met his future wife on return voyage; crew and passengers isolated at Pt Nepean Quarantine station, Portsea, Vic due to outbreak of Spanish Influenza (great chance to get to know your future partner!). Was celebrated in the newspaper upon his retirement in 1956 as having worked for 52 years with not a single day off sick. Was still riding his bicycle until age 86.
